St Lawrences managed by 1999 Junior League winning Goalie Dan Mellett beat local rivals St Brendan’s on a score line of 2-10 0-8 on Sunday at Turn Moss to claim the 2018 Junior B League Title. Having already topped the table and beaten Brendan’s in the league stage St Lawrence’s entered the final as favourites. However it was Brendan’s who started the brightest with an early point followed by a quick free to go 2 points up. That was the last time Brendan’s would lead as St Lawrence’s settled and took control with 2 successive points by captain Adrian Nash (1 a long range free) quickly levelled the game at 2 points a piece . St Lawrence’s cause was then helped when Brendan’s were reduced to 14 men for a straight red card for Matty Garrity for a strike on Conor Maguire ,Stephen Durham punched a point from the resulting free to put Lawrence’s ahead 15min in.
Lawrence’s then dominated the rest of the half and after some great build up play resulted in goal keeper Conor Rice saving off a shot from Conor Maguire but Owen Joyce was on hand to smash the rebound in. Further points from Dan Turley ,Joyce and a brace from Sean Walsh in 3 quick attempts from given the freedom of the right wing having also the luxury of hitting a wide .Brendan’s other point coming inbetween from an outrageous point kicked from play near the corner sideline by Sean Kelly.
The scoreboard at half time 1-7 0-3 .
Both teams started the second half with a wide a piece before Nash slotted a free to get the first score of 2nd half. Both teams traded the opening 4 scores all from frees to make the score 1-9 0-5 after 44min, Brendan’s then hit a purple patch with Sean Kelly making some great runs and play to upset Lawrence’s defence which resulted in the next 2 scores in quick succession 1 from a free but Lawrence’s settled again with a great point from play by Turley in 49min ,Brendans kept going as they pushed for a goal in the last 10min but couldn’t break through the St Lawrences defence with John Fitz at full back and Ben Davidson centre back dominating everything that came their way .
Brendan’s got their last point before super sub Ciaran McLoughlin a youth development player got the last score from last kick of the game soloing past 3 defenders before pin pointing a shot into the bottom corner of St Brendan’s net for a GOAL to leave final score of 2-10 0-8.
